WORK EXPERIENCE AT ALDER HEY
APPLICATIONS ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED. THEY WILL REOPEN IN DECEMBER 2025.
Elevate EBP and Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust are excited to offer this NHS Work Experience opportunity for young people aged 16 and over who are still in an education setting such as sixth form or college in the Liverpool City Region.
LOCATION: Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool.
APPLICATIONS TO REOPEN: Monday 8th December 2025 (for one-week placements in February 2026*).
*There will be multiple placement opportunities throughout the year, taking place during school half terms and holidays. If you’ve already applied when applications were previously open, you don’t need to apply again. Your application will still be considered for future placements.
Please note that this is a placement within a working hospital environment. Students should be prepared to experience the realities of a healthcare setting, where staff may be caring for very ill children. Students will not be involved in the direct care of patients.
You will be working alongside NHS professionals for whom this is their real, everyday role, supporting them during both busy and quieter periods. We ask that applicants be prepared to use their initiative throughout their placement, especially during quieter periods, and be realistic about what the experience might involve. The tasks you undertake may be observational or administrative and will be appropriate for a work experience student. They are also a real part of life working in a hospital setting and will provide opportunities to develop practical skills and knowledge that will be valuable across all roles in the NHS, the healthcare sector, and beyond.
What To Expect:
• Meet and shadow healthcare professionals working in a clinical department in the hospital.
• Complete appropriate tasks and observations designed to give insight into life working at a hospital.
Who Can Apply:
• Young people aged 16 and over (you must be attending an education setting such as college or sixth form) and based in the Liverpool City Region.
• Anyone interested and enthusiastic to learn about what a career in the NHS involves.
• Students who will make the most of this unique opportunitiy, recognising that placements at Alder Hey are highly sought-after, and being selected to take part is a unique opportunity.
• Individuals who will use their initiative, especially during quieter periods, and approach every part of the placement with professionalism and respect for the hospital environment.
Please note that due to the hospital setting, medical information, such as proof of vaccinations, will be required as part of the application process. You must be able to provide written evidence of your up-to-date immunisations from your GP or a screenshot of your vaccination information from the NHS App. This will include MMR 1 and 2 (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) and immunity from chickenpox. Please contact your GP Practice to obtain information on how to receive these vaccinations if you have not had them.
